BF Study Tour

  3. What do we do here? Regen Agro & Conservation
  4. Specifically, what tour are we here for today? - BF Tour
  5. Facilities here - Point to Toilets, Drinking water, Wet waste, Dry waste (chips packets etc), after the tour, during free time pls keep within the perimeter / trail, strictly no entry or stopping at Reserve forests
  6. There are several posters on the walls around here with picture of previous visitors and other important information. During your free time please have a look at them. There will be a little quiz on the posters at the end of the tour
  7. I request you to please introduce yourself, your name, what you study/work, where you come from and how many saplings you have planted
  8. Today we will deal with 3 questions. I request you to read the first question and write it on the board
    1. What is a forest?
    2. What is the state of India’s forest?
    3. How many saplings to replace a tree? Does anyone have a guess? We will try and answer this question in the broken forest. Before we shift discussion to BF area please

  11. BF Area - What happened here? What do we lose when we lose a tree?
    1. 1 + 1.5 root mass = 2.5 trees
    2. Every tree lost reduces 3% further
    3. Not just India, 30% of Amazon is already lost

    5. 30-40 years of living root network conducts water and air deep into soil. No roots = no water
    6. Name water sources available to a farmer
    7. What about rainfall? How much does it rain in Mangalore?

    3. We have the biggest bamboo, smallest, creeper bamboo, black bamboo, blue bamboo and bamboo which gives wine to name a few
    4. Bamboo cools air by 2-3 degrees
    5. Releases 30% more oxygen than any other tree
  13. Giant Bamboo
    1. Growth 4ft or 1.2m per day, especially when there is lightening
    2. New poles reach their full 100ft height in 30-40days
    3. Poles can be harvested 5-6 years after planting
    4. The amount of biomass that a teak tree produces in 40 years, bamboo produces in 5 years

    1. Why Basecamp planted bamboo in the first place?
    2. Root system of bamboo -
      1. acts as a conduit for rain water
      2. in 2022 we were terrified of the force of the water rushing down toward office area
      3. in 2023 the water flow reduced
      4. in 2024 flow is now a trickle and very clear
    3. Competition between bamboo and rubber?
      1. Root system of rubber is tap root
      2. Also plants do not compete at root level
      3. Competition is at canopy level

    5. Individual level - Commit 1 day a week to work for nature. Take up a serious assignment during your holidays. Join your college or local temple/church eco groups. National level - Join BNHS
  18. Giant Pejakai tree
    1. Where does the material for the leaves and branches come from?
    2. Use of this tree for farmer? Giant fertiliser plant
    3. Ingredients of forest compost
    4. 4 volunteers + 1 inoculant
    5. Protect trees that birds and bats love
  19. Carrying capacity
    1. Introduction to Puru and Regen Agro
    2. Lunch break 2-3.15pm, reassemble at office, last person to arrive to do 10 push-ups
    3. There is rope braiding, swings, rain shower (pls turn off after use)
    4. Use of dorm to take rest is permitted
    5. Those who submit a review entitled to a free sapling, cutting or bamboo toothbrush
    6. There is no password on the wifi here
    7. Point to Nursery where 50rs saplings / cuttings are kept
    8. Whistle at 3.10pm

  21. Welcome back, we hope you enjoyed the lunch and free time. 
  22. Those of you who wish to work for conservation in a systematic and scientific manner can sign up for an Internship with us or better still with Sammilan Shetty Butterfly park, you can scan QR Code
  23. We recommend that you apply for a membership of BHNS India’s oldest and biggest conservation society by scanning QR code. Normal membership costs 1416rs but student memberships cost only 450rs, here is a sample of the world class Hornbill magazine that members receive.
  24. If you wish to contribute to the Staff welfare, you can ‘adopt a tree’. The money goes directly to the workers here
  25. We also offer other tours such as the Science of Laudato Si tour & Bamboo farming and applications tour
  26. You can also visit the basecamp with your family to celebrate your birthday, family picnics
  27. You can stay overnight in the dorm, sleep on the star gazing deck, take a forest night walk, early morning birding, trekking etc
